Exercises for the Working Writer

Unless you’re Steven King, JK Rowling, or some other huge sold a million copies author, you probably have a day job.  If you work something in service or blue collar, you probably get exercise at your day job.  I was a fast food worker and waitress for 6 years, till I went to law school.  My part time jobs had me on my feet so I got my exercise in running around.

In law school and now afterwards, I have a desk job.  So I’m at work 8 hours, with a 1 hour lunch, and about a 45 minute to 1 hour commute both ways each day.  Then I have to sit my butt down and write, edit, and do research on how to run a freaking business and indie publish.

That’s a hell of a lot of sitting down!

So I’ve started figuring out work arounds.

#1: If you can, convert your desk to standing.  I’ve done this at my past 3 desk jobs.  It takes some jerry rigging and you may get some weird looks, but at least you can stand a few hours a day.

#2: Walk or exercise during your lunch hour.  If you have a gym in your building, use it!  It’s there to make sure you get your blood flowing in the middle of the day.  Either use the whole hour and eat at your desk, or just do half an hour and then eat.  If you don’t have a gym, walk around.  I fast walk around the building every day for about half an hour then go eat.

#3: Desk exercises.  Go here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jacquelynsmith/2013/02/06/the-10-best-exercises-to-do-at-your-desk/ or here: http://greatist.com/fitness/deskercise-33-ways-exercise-work or just google it.  You’ll find tons of stuff.

When you have to spend your life at a desk, you’ll get more than just weight issues.  I have sciatica problems (one because I’m too small for the average office chair so it cuts my legs off wrong.  I had to bring in my own chair because it’s small and my feet can actually touch the ground), and people get back problems, shoulder tension, headaches, ect…

We didn’t evolve to sit in chairs.  We evolved to run and hunt.  If you can, get a treadmill desk.  I think that’s the best invention for offices since computers.  You can just slowly walk for hours while you type, it’s genius.

Take are of yourself and happy writing 🙂
